Implement the standard
A guide for software providers. Any software provider may implement the standard. There is no fee to say a product is "built to the standard".
No automated grade is compliance sign-off. Only a person can grade a file 'Does not meet'.
The rule pack
The rule pack is a JSON file with one rule per required item. Each version has its own URL that never changes: https://lending-intelligence.vercel.app/standard/slfs-v0.1.json. /standard/slfs-latest.json always serves the current version. Pin your software to a numbered version and move up when you've reviewed the changelog.
In v0.1, Section A's rules are complete. Sections B to F are listed in the file's sections with "rules": "todo"; their rules will be added in a later version. Until then, read their requirements on the section pages.
How to apply it
- Map each path in a rule's fields to where your system holds that data.
- Check every rule whose
applies_whenis true for the case. The expressions use a simple JavaScript-like form over the field paths. Treat them as a description of the check, not code to run witheval. - Where a rule's
red_flagis true, show the adviser the flag and ask for a written reason. - Grade the file by its most serious failed rule, using each rule's
severity. With no failed rules and no unexplained red flags, the file meets the standard. - Show the result as a pre-check, with the failed items listed in the standard's own words, and link each one to its anchor on the section page.
Software can apply the first three grades. “Does not meet” always needs a human reviewer. How grading works.
Schema
| Field | Type | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| standard | string | "Specialist Lending File Standard" |
| short_name | string | "SLFS" |
| version | string | The version these rules belong to. |
| status | string | "consultation_draft" until version 1.0. |
| publisher | string | "Lending Intelligence Ltd" |
| licence | string | "Free to use and implement" |
| url, schema | string (URL) | The standard's home page, and this schema. |
| grades | string[] | The four grade keys, from best to worst. |
| sections[] | object[] | One entry per section: id (A–F), title, url, and rules: "complete" or "todo". A "todo" section has a TODO note and no rules yet. |
| rules[].id | string | Stable rule id, e.g. A3. Ids are never reused for a different requirement. |
| rules[].section | string | The section letter. |
| rules[].applies_when | string (expression) | When the rule applies, as a condition on the case's fields. |
| rules[].requirement | string | The required item, in words to show the adviser. |
| rules[].check_type | "field" | "calculated" | "ai_judged" | How the rule is checked (below). |
| rules[].fields | string[] | The case fields the rule reads, as dotted paths. "debts[].balance" means the balance on every item in the debts list. |
| rules[].severity | grade key | The grade the file gets when this rule fails. |
| rules[].red_flag | string (expression), optional | A condition that raises a red flag needing a written reason. |
| red_flags[] | object[] | The section's red flags: id (e.g. A-RF1), section and flag, in words. |
check_type takes one of three values
fieldmeans the data is present.calculatedmeans the software works the answer out.ai_judgedmeans free text is assessed. An ai_judged rule can never return "meets" on its own.

}The badge
Software that checks files against the standard can show the “Built to the Standard” badge, free. It comes as a full badge for light and dark backgrounds, a one-line version for footers, the red SLFS tab on its own, and a 24px square.
The badge files will be published here with version 1.0 of the standard. They aren't available while the standard is a consultation draft.
Rules for using it
- The badge must link to
https://lending-intelligence.vercel.app/standard. - Use it only on software that checks files against the standard.
- Never describe it as a certification. It is not an endorsement by Lending Intelligence or the FCA.
- Firms must not use it to claim that their files are compliant.
- Don't redraw, recolour or reword it.
